Department of English
The department of English has established its roots in 1974 by marking an excellent performance towards the growth of institution. Late Prof N.G Sabhahit being a patriarch & principal of English Department guided the destiny of the college for the first quarter century of its existence. Thanks to his vision and exemplary leadership that the department has enriched in all dimensions.Subsequently after his retirement Prof SalehaKhayum had taken over the mantle as the head of the department and continued to make impressive growth during her 37 years of service. She retired in the month of September 2013.
Thereby Dr. R.G Hegde was heading the English department along with temporary lecturer Smt. Heena Khan who joined the institution in 2010 on management roll. The moment he was about to take over his charge as an HOD he got appointed to the Mangalore University as a professor, Consequently Miss Jolita Borges has been appointed as a temporarylecturer from 7th January 2014 on management roll. A Present Smt. Heena Khan and Miss Jolita Borges are managing the English department

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT:
- To improve the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing in English.
- To encourage students to take the study of English language seriously.
- To create interest and motivate the students to give importance to English as a tool of communication.
- To promote creative writing and journalism to bring out their hidden literary talents.
- Eradicate fear of Speaking in English through debate competition, seminars, Pick & speak and group discussion.
- To guide in making career choices available to students of Language and literature.
TEACHING LEARNING:
- The department has been making use of the innovative methods for teaching & learning. Like- Screening related to English Literary Novels
- We conduct regular tests, seminars, group discussion and creative spoken activities.
- Assign students to prepare chart works, and creative writing (Magazine).
- Use Handout and Worksheets for teaching.
- Introduced Computer Aided Language Learning.
- Encourage students to join Functional English Courses for improvement.
HEALTHY PRACTICES:
- Share & update relevant articles on Language and literature.
- We display articles related to literature from newspapers and magazines.
- Give website details which encourage learning through Internet.
- Organize events which facilitates use of English language (allow the students to host various programs organized in the college)
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:
- The department is actively engaged in course Module Development and syllabus Development.
- Smt. SalehaKhayum and Dr. R.G.Hegde of the Department of English have jointly framed the draft syllabus for the UGC aided Add-on-courses in Functional English, which was subsequently accepted by the Board of studies, Karnatak University, Dharwad.
- Further, both Smt. SalehaKhayum have sent notes to the BOS for syllabus upgradation. They were also closely involved in the making of the Karnatak University syllabus for all the Semesterized courses.
- Smt. SalehaKhayum has prepared Self Learning Material for B.A. II, Basic English, published under Distance Education Programme of Karnataka University, Dharwad.
- Dr. R.G.Hegde was invited by the UG BOS to conduct aOne–Day Orientation on the Semesterised Syllabus at Karnatak University, Dharwad.
- The department has been serving the cause of quality in Higher Education.
FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH:
The department has been a pioneer in the starting of the Add-on courses in Functional English. The courses offer an opportunity for the undergraduate students to acquire the much needed language skills along with their regular studies. At present students are pursuing their Add-on courses in Functional English. The Functional English Course is of 30hrs. It comprises Certificate Course & Diploma Course recognized by our college.
FUTURE VISION:
- Strengthen the existing Courses
- Introduce English Language Improvement Programme
- Organize Workshops in Career guidance
- Introduce a Career Oriented Course in Mass Communication & Journalism
- Prepare students for Entrance Exam especially for B.Ed.

English in the class room a distasteful vestige of a colonial past or an essential ingredient of economic competitiveness in the future
The debate goes on & the debate today is more than academic.
Right now English remains a bridge for individual, Companies & Countries & in this age of Light & Darkness, Despair & Hope we are striving to do our best
