DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

Dandeli is situated in the central Western Ghats which is a part of the 36 Biodiversity hotspots in the world, which makes it an ideal destination to study Botany. Keeping this in view, our Management has taken interest in introducing Botany at the Degree Level, as a Minor subject in the year 1974. In 1976 it was shifted to present building with a built up area of 120 sq. mts. From the year 1992 it is one of the three equal Optional subjects.

Our Activities
GREEN CAMPUS
Every year along with NSS our department take initiative in planting trees during July month under the banner Vanamahotsava and take care in maintaing the plants and keeps the campus green. The important tree species mentioned are Anthocephaluscadamba, Mitragynaparvifolia, Lagerstromiaflos –reginae, Alzadhiracthtaindica , Saracaindica, Santalum album, Vateraiaindica,Ficusglomerata, Ficusasperrima and Bombaxmalabaricumetc STUDY TOUR AND TRAINING PROGRAMME:

He who travels knows much, says Thomas, and this is the main purpose of our tour. Since Botany is the Science subject and it is not enough study what is present in the book. Field knowledge is very essential in case of topics like Taxonomy, Morphology, Ecology. It is not possible to get all the plant belonging to different species and varieties in our Laboratory, or Garden. The students to look forward for more plant diversities by travelling to different places and by studying them. Keeping this in view, the department organizes study tours to different places every year. For B.Sc I semester students the tour is arranged during the I term i.e. between August to September (One Day) to study and collect the lower group of plants such as Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes and Petridophytes.

For B.Sc. V semesterStudy Tour is conducted outside Dandeli during 1st term to study Taxonomy of Angiosperms. During this study tour students collect flowering twigs of 9" length and then prepare Herbarium sheets with details such as locality, habit name of the plant and time of flowering. Each student should produce 10 Herbarium sheets of different families at the time of examination along with tour report. Marks are allotted for this during the practical exam.

The students are asked to submit the Tour Reports and marks are awarded for the same in the annual examination.
